I found this on YouTube today, this is an interview with someone who had the bow legs correction surgery with “Ilizarov-Veklich” apparatus. I think that this is a very helpful video for anyone who is interested in the surgery.
He said in the interview that he did it for cosmetic reasons, and I can really relate to that.
Part 1:
Part 2:
I must say that the “Ilizarov-Veklich” apparatus looks to me less frightening than the regular “Ilizarov” apparatus I read about…
I’d like to hear what you thought about this, so please leave comments

Hi, gr8 post thanks for posting. Information is useful!
Hi, do you know the cost of such an operation? I am bow-legged too and I am very interested to get it fixed.
It’s a pity that people don’t realize the importance of this information. Thanks for posing it.
Thank you for posting!! Im thinking about this operation for a while. One thing is stopping me- money
much to expensive . I hope my dream will come true one day!
i am contemplating correcting mine too but i dont know how best that can be done. how much does the surgery cost and is surgery the only way out?
Do you have to go to Ukraine for the surgery and what kind or risks this surgery can cause?
Thanks for finding this information!
@Vo, regarding your question – In general, as far as I know, bow legs correction surgery is performed in many countries, so I don’t think you have to go to the Ukraine for that. Maybe the specific surgery that was shown here is only done there…you can probably consult with a specialist about that
Hi
I’m bowlegged too…I wish i could have the surgery but I really cannot afford it.The ukraine hospital is quite xpensive(about 15000€ for surgery and 120€ per day at the clinic)but I found out its cheaper in India.A hospital in Akola(9hr train ride from mumbai)told me it will cost about $3000 for surgery and $30-$40 per day at the clinic.Maybe if someone finds another alternative, pls let us all know…meanwhile u can check me out discussing bow legs and other issues at thoughtsandwishesbyrenee dot blogspot dot com.Its quite new…maybe we can all find a way to raise the money for surgery together.
well my doctor told me that if i don’t get it done it will cause severe arthritis in my old age so i found this info very helpful….Thanks

Hello! I am from Serbia and I’ve found here in Serbia clinic that performs the correction of bow legs. I do not know how much does it cost but I think it is less than in Ukraine. The doctor called Milorad Mitkovic and he’s known as our best orthopedic surgeon here.
Link with someone’s story on a bow legs surgery:

hi thankz 4 postin dis i am also interested
in correctin my bow legs too please help me out…..
Wow this video was very helpful because i didnt know you can get surgery to fix my bow legs! i hate it… ive been ashamed to wear skirts, dresses and shorts for many years! its quite expensive i must say but i really want to get it done after your video. I live in Calgary, AB, Canada and i cant find a plastic surgery clinic that offers this procedure =(
@michelle – a surgery can leave scars on your legs (I’m not a doctor, but I’ve been told that the legs tend to scar badly) so I think that before you do anything to fix your bow legs make sure to consult with (several) good orthopedists. I don’t think that this is something that plastic surgeons do as it’s not just a cosmetic surgery, but then again I’m not an expert.
I decided not to have the surgery (after I’ve been told by several doctors that since it’s only a cosmetic issue in my case a surgery won’t be a smart thing to do) and I know that I can wear skirts of a certain length that still look good, and 2/3 pants also works well with the correct shoes.
It’s kind of reassuring that im not the only one has this problem and im not the only one that is thinking of having it done..
Hello,
I am a 48 year old woman who has suffered from the effects of having bowed legs my whole life. Both physically and emotionally. Unfortunately people can and have been cruel my enire life. 5 years ago I began having horrible knee pain which just progressively got worse.
Arthritis had set in and taken it’s toll. Recently I had knee replacement surgery and much to my surprise it has corrected my bowed leg, as well. I am having my right knee replace just as soon as I recover from the replacement of my left knee. I was quite shocked when my husband told me a few days after surgery that my left leg was no longer bowed. After years of embarassment and I too would never wear shorts, skirts, etc trying to hide the fact that I was bowlegged. Unless you have experienced the stares, comments, snickers, etc no one can fully understand what it does to one’s self esteem.
The point I guess I am trying to make for those of you who too have endured the humiliation of this, know that there are many of us who do understand and I would highly recommend others to see an orthopedic surgeon
to discuss your options. This condition will most likely
cause problems as you grow older and most orthopedic surgeons know this. Medically speaking, insurance will take care of the cost of the surgery if you are suffering physically from the effects of being bowlegged. Its definately worth checking into.
Whoever said it is only cosmetic does not know what they are talking about. I had my bowed legs fixed 20 years ago. I have no problems. My brother didn’t, he is now 40 and just got his knees replaced and is still having problems. You will start having ligament problems, arthritis, knees buckling. I now need to find out how to pay for my son to get it done!!
Hello All, my name is Keith, I’m 21 years old and I have a right bow leg and it causes me serious anxiety physically and emotionally.
I am from Australia and from my research, I have not found any orthopedic surgeons who performs this procedure.
The only site I have found useful is http://www.ladisten.com but can imagine the costs involved for travel, accommodation and the surgery.
If there is anyone who might know about any surgeons in Australia, please comment back.
Kind Regards,
Keith

Hi,
I feel everyone’s pain. I suffered many years from having bowed legs. I recently had a surgery in USA and was wondering if anyone wants me to share my experience with you. I just started a blog to post my photos and other resources about the surgery.
http://notacowgirl.wordpress.com/
@Not a Cowgirl – Thank you so much for sharing!
I’d really love to hear about your experience – was it painful? can you work ok now? Are you satisfied with the results?
thanks and I hope you are well!
@Shelley – No problem! Thank you so much for your respons! I really want to share my experience with other people out there who are struggling! When I first started researching about bowleg surgery I had no idea there was a connection between my knee pains (pretty minor) and bowlegs so I was thrilled when the orthopaedic doctor said it would be covered under my insurance.
My surgeon recommended having a separate surgery for each leg (so I don’t have to be on a wheelchair) and I had my first surgery on the right leg in October, 2010 and my second surgery last week, February 10, 2011.
First two days after the surgery was quite painful but bearable besides they have excellent narcotic pain relievers – morphine, dilaudid, percocet. The pain became manageable after 2-3 days. The pain was little worse after the second surgery because my body has been on pain reliever for 4 months since the first surgery. However, the hardest part comes after the surgery – getting around with crutches (for 4-5 weeks after the surgery), physical therapy, etc. I went back to work after a week from the first surgery and it was really hard (for example going to the bathroom, picking up prints) so I am taking 10 days off for the second surgery.
Even though I started to put weight on my right leg 4 weeks after the surgery I still had hard time getting around due to limping and pain. I started to feel comfortable walking around after 3 months after the surgery (still not running or walking longer than 20 minutes without stopping) Also the straighted leg is slightly longer (1~1.5 inches) than bowed leg so walking feels little unbalanced. My surgeon told me it’s better to do the second surgery with 3~4 months.
So far I am very satisfied with the result because my legs look straight and the whole process with the sugery was really smooth. The surgeon was great and the hospital is only couples miles away from my house. I am really glad I didn’t fly to Ukraine. Even though Dr. Veklich must be a great surgeon it would be hard to communicate with him and the Ilzarov-Veklich appartus is not for everyone. The gap between my legs was at least 5~7 inches so pretty bowed but my surgeon thought it was overkill. He implanted a small wedge so align the angle, about 7 degrees. This medical method is called I-balance and I believe it’s the latest technology for tibial osteotomy.
I finally posted some photos on my blog and will upload more photos this weekend so hope you come and visit! http://notacowgirl.wordpress.com/
Very best,
Not a Cowgirl
@Not a Cowgirl – Thanks, I will share your blog in my next post, it’s very informative and the pictures really help understand what’s going on.
Thank you so much and it’s great to see how other people are sharing the same problem on your blog!
I really feel self-conscious about my legs. I never understood my odd shaped legs compared to other girls until just a few weeks ago. I’m no incredibly bowlegged, but enough to make me want to have straight legs, is there anything besides surgery that could align my legs?
Hi my name is chuluunaa i am from mongolia and i am a bowed leg too and i am so suffering becaause in mongolia most girls are straigth legs so its very hard to me please help where i can have a cheap surgery

Hi everyone! It’s been a long time since i wrote my first post. So, for those who are thinking to have bow leggs correction, I have some new informations. In Serbia, Nis, this procedure costs 2000 E. The 6th day the doctor starts to screw the pin a bit and this takes 20 days to correct your problem. After that it takes 2,5-3 months for bones to heal. And that’s all. I really hope it doesn’t hurt because I intend to submit to the operation.
cheers
I forgot to mention that this procedure is performed by dr Mitkovic and the device that is applied on your leg is his invention.

Hello to all
Taking reckless decision and attacking bowed legs issues without doing a proper research can lead people to a very sad place in their life . I went through hell in the last 4 years and thinking back I would have done myself a big favor If I have chosen to do this complicated surgical procedure in my native country and be on the safe side . What happened to me made a huge impact on all aspects of my life and being half cripple is sometimes worse than being 100% cripple.

I had a good experience getting an orthopedic reconstruction surgery done in India. Initially I was a little apprehensive but once I landed at the hospital, the experience turned out really well. The doctors were very professional and the infrastructure was impressive. I took help from folks at http://www.india4health.com and they helped me arrange the treatment and stay in Goa. Its been 7 months now and I look great. I wish the doctors and the staff success. You can find more information at: http://www.india4health.com/orthopaedic.html
In the Dominican Republic (3 hrs from NYC by plane) There is an excellent clinic correcting bow legs. Price depends on the correction. Ranges from 7,000 to 12,000 for BOTH LEGS!. For more info, contact me at fernandoreyesmedico@hotmail.com
I just got a quot.
the price for surgery is 16,000$US including 2 weeks staying in ladisten hospital, the price includes a single room, food, satellite TV, air-conditioner,nurses, all medicament needed for your stay at clinic for the time of correction. I think I will fly there end of October.
I wouldnt be in a hurry to fly to Ukraine , I have Family there and most people I know who live in Ukraine will rather be operated at western countries rather then be operated at the Ukraine , Medical facilities and medicine there is very primitive , and if You do a search on google regarding Doctor Veklich who runs Ladisten clinic , Youll find that his reputation isnt one You want to try out on your legs …
